The Gospel of The Lord!
Jesus said to his disciples:"The person who is trustworthy in very small matters
is also trustworthy in great ones;
and the person who is dishonest in very small matters
is also dishonest in great ones.
If, therefore, you are not trustworthy with dishonest wealth,
who will trust you with true wealth?
If you are not trustworthy with what belongs to another,
who will give you what is yours?
No servant can serve two masters.
He will either hate one and love the other,
or be devoted to one and despise the other.
You cannot serve both God and mammon."
We were able to make confessions prior to Mass last evening. I think this opened my heart and mind to hearing the gospel and perhaps digesting a little more than I normally do. It maybe helped that Rick took Patrick out in the vestibule. I could really hear the readings :-) So what does the "bad steward" represent? Dishonesty, wastefulness, thievery. Does the steward try to make right with his master? No! He goes a step farther once he is caught and begins to squander even more of the masters goods to buy some friends for when he is homeless and broke. We teach our children these lessons every day. So, I began to think of going to confession and placing my account of sins before Jesus and begging His forgiveness and being the awesome, merciful Father, He absolved me of my sins. Then I began to think of how wonderful, that we can do that and not have to worry about those sins anymore. In the reading we can see that the steward sinned in both the commission and omission. He did what was dishonest and he failed to do what was good/right. So when we are sitting listening to gossip and we fail to speak up and or walk away we are guilty of the sin of omission. Let's say we don't repeat the gossip but we listened. The information is in there. One more thought, bringing souls to God. We are given the word, the truth, the knowledge of God, are we sharing it? Are we bringing souls to God? Can we do more? The "bad steward" was willing to pull others down with him.
So be a "good steward" use the gifts God has given you to do good, frequent the confessional and seek spiritual direction on how to use the gifts God has given you to be a good steward. OH! and Give Glory to God!
